Sales at one of the region’s biggest modular builders rose to almost £70m last year.

Walker Modular, which has bases in Amsterdam Road and Marfleet Avenue in Hull, manufactures bathroom pods for big names including Travelodge, Premier Inn and Hampton by Hilton.

Turnover at the business soared to £69.8m in the 2017/18 year, up from £61.7m the previous year.

Despite this however, profits dropped from £10.3m to £7.1m.

Directors at Walker Modular said: “The company has had another profitable year of trading, with increased growth whilst achieving an operating profit of £8.7m.

The company has established strong supply chains and invested in quality control to further improve operational efficiencies and customer satisfaction.

“This supports the company’s continued commitment to building product confidence and customer trust.”

Directors said they were confident the business would see “substantial growth over coming years,” and hinted at plans to expand into wider markets.

Recent contract wins include work to supply more than 150 bathrooms for a new Travelodge hotel in Portsmouth, and 142 pods for a new Premier Inn in Blackpool.

Outside of the hotel sector, Walker Modular is supplying more than 400 pods to a major student accommodation scheme in Sheffield, and more than 1,000 pods for a similar project in Birmingham.

Sales at the modular specialist rose by 13 per cent in the last financial year.

Looking ahead to the future of the business, directors said: “Walker Modular aims to continue to be a primary supplier to leading developers and blue chip companies throughout the UK, delivering high-quality products while continuing the recent year’s successes and increase in market share.

“The board believes the company’s strategy, together with its experienced management, will be a solid foundation for successful business performance in the future."

Walker Modular was founded in 2006.

Its factories in Hull have the capacity to produce up to 1,500 units a week, if demand is high.
