A pizza restaurant is coming to the Discovery Centre in Cleethorpes, as its new owners reveal "big plans" for the popular attraction.

A new company has taken over running the resort's Discovery Centre, sandpit and paddling pool from North East Lincolnshire Council, and have announced major plans to revamp the attractions and make them even better for local people and businesses.

The business does not wish to be identified at this point, but a spokesman said that they plan on setting up a brand new wood-fired pizza restaurant in the centre beside the Boating Lake, along with improvements to the café, tourist information desk and the play facilities.

They will also be taking over the public toilets in the area, with the hopes of keeping them open and free to use for the public.

The new pizza restaurant will create between 20 to 30 new jobs, with the company planning to retain all of the staff who currently work there.

Improvements to the sandpit are also planned in order to make it an even better attraction for those visiting the resort in the good weather.

The plan is to keep the paddling pool in place, but the new owners are looking at ways of improving it or replacing it with splash pads, if preferred by the public in a consultation that will be held after the summer.

The fully licensed pizza restaurant will have two wood-fire ovens from Italy, the same that are used in the likes of Pizza Express and Prezzo, which will create Neopolitan and thin-crust pizzas, with there also being plans for sour dough ones as well.

The centre area of the the Discovery Centre will be turned into a dog-friendly reception area, where customers will be able to sit down with their pooch and enjoy a coffee from the café, or a slice or two from the restaurant.

They have also said that they intend to keep the tourist information desk, which will also function as shop.

The new owner said: "We are thrilled to be taking over the Discovery Centre from the council, and we have big plans to make it even better than it is today.

"We will be opening a brand new wood-fire pizza restaurant in the centre, which will create between 20 to 30 new jobs, and I would like to stress that we will be retaining all of the staff who currently work there.

"We have secured two new pizza ovens from Italy, which are used in popular restaurants such as Pizza Express and Prezzo, so we know that they produce the highest quality of food.

"Along with this we will be hoping to improve other aspects of the facility, with a refurbished cafe and sandpit. We know how popular the paddling pool is, and it will remain in place and free to use for the community, but we will be consulting with the public about possible changes that we could make, such as adding splash pads, or replacing it with splash pads. But only if the public approves after a consultation.

"All being well we plan to open in mid-June, and would like to invite everyone down. I am sure that it will be a brilliant new addition to Cleethorpes."
