New era for Sea View Street as plaza plan is approved

Cleethorpes' Sea View Street will soon look like this.

Proposals for the plaza area at the top of the resort street have been agreed by Cabinet.

Following the start of the first phase of the exciting Coastal Communities Funded project in the resort, residents, local businesses and special interest groups were given the chance to have their say on two proposed designs for it.

The general design was approved by the Cabinet in August 2018, when it was agreed that more detailed options would be prepared and put to the public to identify a preference.

They included the introduction of a new public space to replace the existing surface car park at the top of Sea View Street which will provide a unique gathering space at the highest point within the resort.

Following an open event and an online consultation earlier this month, more than 350 responses were received, with a clear preference being expressed for Option A.

This design has now been updated to reflect some of the comments received and the final design has been prepared in collaboration with artist, Katayoun Dowlatshahi who has used the natural environment as her inspiration. This is reflected in the design which focuses on the study of tidal movement and coastal planting.

The design also includes the reintroduction of street trees, which were a significant feature of the original Victorian resort, seating and imaginative lighting.

The aim is to create a place where people can pause, meet friends and take in the views over the estuary and enjoy the impressive backdrop of historic buildings.

Councillor Peter Wheatley, North East Lincolnshire Council Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We promised to come back to the local residents and businesses with some options for the plaza area of Sea View Street, and I’d like to thank people for giving us their views.

"It’s an important area of the resort, much used during events like the Armed Forces Day, so we want to make it as welcoming as possible.”

The plaza will be delivered as part of the wider programme of works around the Sea View Street which will be on site during Autumn 2019.

In cabinet, portfolio holder for regeneration, Councillor Peter Wheatley said: "This is the final piece of the regeneration of Cleethorpes. We have got the High Street and Alexandra Road works and this will be the piece at the end of it all .

"It will give great views across the river and will enhance the area and attract people."He added local writers will be invited to contribute to series of engraved words on the stonework.

"We could have some kind of competition and go for local writers to contribute what the wording should be," he said.

Councillor Gaynor Rogers said: "It will be a real asset to the town. There will still be one hour's free parking at nearby Wardall Street Street car park."

Councillor Matthew Patrick said the plaza would become a useful area for organisers of the Armed Forces Day in Cleethorpes.
