MKM Building Supplies fought off competition from some of its biggest rivals to be named Independent Builder’s Merchant of the Year at a prestigious industry awards.

The business, founded by East Yorkshire entrepreneurs David Kilburn and Peter Murray in 1995, collected the award at the Builders’ Merchants Awards for Excellence.

MKM picked up two other awards on the night to complete a hat-trick of success, as one of Hull’s biggest businesses continues to impress.

Linda Clarke, digital and marketing director at MKM, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have picked up this prestigious award.

“It’s the culmination of all the hard work at every single MKM branch throughout the country.

“Awards like this make us realise just how far we’ve come since being founded in Hull in 1995.

“Looking forward, with plans for even more branches, we’re all excited to see what 2019 holds.”

MKM’s expansion has taken on a significant momentum of late; with 56 branches and counting.

The company’s ambitious growth plan has the firm on-track to hit a target of 100 branches by 2022.

MKM earlier this year announced revenue had soared to £395m – a record for the business.

David Kilburn, executive chairman of MKM, previously said the company was “delighted” at the result.

He said: “MKM benefits from its unique business model, which sees branch directors take an equity stake in their branch and a share of profits.

“This helps us attract, retain and incentivise the best talent, both financially and through autonomy, which plays out in levels of customer service.”

MKM is the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant and provides a one-stop-shop for branded building materials, timber, plumbing and heating supplies.
