Booming German discounter Lidl has announced plans to open a second supermarket in Scunthorpe.

The site earmarked for the multi-million pound investment is the former Yorkshire Electricity offices on Dudley Road, off the town's Queensway.

If given approval, the new store would bring Lidl in direct competition against Ashby rivals Morrisons and Aldi.

Detail of the number of jobs to be created have not yet been revealed.

But a public consultation session is to be held at the nearby Grange Farm Hobbies Centre on February 28 between 3pm and 8pm.

The announcement comes as Lidl confirmed that it had exchanged contracts with St Modwen Properties PLC, securing the new site, overlooking the Go Outdoors store in Dudley Road.

The supermarket would cover 1,325 square metres and boast facilities including an in-store bakery, customer toilets and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl UK's regional head of property, Graham Burr, said: "We are delighted to be opening a new store in Scunthorpe, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.

"We've seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers in and around Scunthorpe.

"We are firmly committed to helping boost the local economy by creating new jobs and working with local suppliers in the construction of the new store.

"The team are very much looking forward to the public consultation day when we will outline our plans and get input from those who will directly benefit from the new store."

Will Martin, senior planning manager at St. Modwen, said: "Lidl is an excellent brand and we are delighted to exchange contracts for this prominent brownfield site in Scunthorpe. The development will be a significant investment by both St. Modwen and Lidl into Scunthorpe.

"The new store will provide a real benefit to shoppers, as well as creating a number of local jobs and an improved access on Queensway. We look forward to meeting the community and hearing their views at the public consultation."

Scunthorpe will be one of 60 new stores to be opened this year by Lidl, which already trades in the town's Doncaster Road and in Brigg and Barton-upon-Humber.
