The Jewson builders merchant on Pyewipe in Grimsby is to close by the end of the month.

The builders merchant, that has premises in Grimsby and Immingham, confirmed on Monday that it will be closing its branch on Pyewipe by the end of the month, following a review of their branch network.

The company has said that they are relocating employees to neighbouring branches and looking to find them alternative suitable roles elsewhere in the wider group.

A spokesperson for Jewson said: “We are continually reviewing our branch network to make sure it is best able to meet the changing needs of our customers and have recently made the decision that our Grimsby Pyewipe branch will close.

“Customers will continue to be able to trade with Jewson and access our full range by visiting our nearby branch in Immingham.

“Many of the colleagues working at our Pyewipe branch are being re-located to neighbouring branches and we are working closely with other colleagues to try to find them alternative suitable roles across our wider Group.

"We are extremely grateful for all the efforts of all our dedicated colleagues and know this is a very difficult time for some.”

The news comes after a planning application emerged in March 2017 for a Marston's Carvery pub, drive-thru Costa Coffee shop and car service centre, which would be based on the Jewson site.

Proposals for a new development including a carvery pub, drive-thru Costa Coffee and MOT/service centre in Pyewipe Road, Grimsby.

Jewson have not said whether or not the closure of the Grimsby branch is due to the planning application's approval, although at the time the company said that it would be remaining at the site, and making improvements to the facilities.

In 2017, a spokesperson said:  "We would like to reassure our employees and customers that it's business as usual.

"We have no plans to close or move our business from this site.

"If the plans do materialise, we're confident that the improved Jewson facilities and new developments will be a real benefit to the local community."

It is believed that the new development will lead to the creation of 100 jobs at the new businesses and also a further 100 jobs during the construction of the site.

At the planning committee meeting, most councillors backed the development, and said it could become a great asset at the entrance to Grimsby town centre.
