Inside the new Hull bar looking to 'bring the party' to Old Town

A new beach-themed bar is promising to blare out cheesy tunes from the 80s, 90s and noughties in a bid to bring the “party vibe” to Old Town.

Surf is set to officially open in Posterngate today (Friday, December 7) after replacing Shak Bar & Grill which only launched in April earlier this year.

Mark Newton sold the Caribbean tiki bar, which served a Gadgie Burger menu, to new owners, with Alex Fletcher now set to manage the new bar, which is on the same street as Atik and Mission.

First look around Surf on Posterngate, Hull.

Mr Fletcher, 27, said: “We’ve dimmed the lightings and changed the music policy to revamp the atmosphere. We’ll have smoke machines and disco lights so the vibe of the place can match the area it is in.

“We are doing a variety of drink promotions, including £2.99 doubles, and at the moment it is £3 a pint. It used to be a shots bar and we want to have more of a party atmosphere.”

When Shak opened in what used to be Soho Lounge, Mr Newton installed bamboo poles and a thatched roof to create an intimate and tropical venue for punters.

He spent £60,000 doing up the premises with money given to him by the Old Town Grant Scheme and Mr Newton said he hoped to add to the revival of the area.

But, after he sold up shop, Mr Fletcher is now keen to put his own stamp on the place, and the venue will no longer serve food, stay open until 2.30am and ultimately “keep things simple” in his bid for success.

“We’ve been open the past couple of weeks – one week as Shak and the other as Surf - and people seem to be taking to the new theme and concept,” he said.

“You can go down Newland Avenue and the Marina if you want to sit and have cocktails and be sort of sophisticated. I’m not saying you can’t do that in Surf and we will get people in around 9pm and 10pm who will have a cocktail but after that it will be a party bar with a party atmosphere.

“The speed of service is a big thing for us and we want people to come in and get a quick drink – we want to keep it simple.

“We’ll still do a couple of cocktails so your standard ones like Sex on the Beach and a Blue Lagoon but we really do want to offer quick service.

“We are really looking forward to the launch night so come down and give us a try.”
