Home Bargains to replace Homebase at Lakeside Retail Park - and there are jobs on offer

By Scunthorpe Telegraph | Posted: 27 Feb 2019

Home Bargains have announced that they will occupy the vacant spot on the Lakeside Retail Park left by Homebase.

The discount retailer will open their doors on Saturday, May 25, according to signs that have appeared outside the premises.

This will give shoppers a long bank holiday weekend to see what the shop has to offer, with Monday, May 27 scheduled to be the spring bank holiday.

They are now recruiting for staff ahead of the opening date.

This will be the fourth premises for the retailer, in addition to their stores on Ashby High Street, the Parishes and Skippingdale Retail Park on Holyrood Drive.

The specifics of different roles aren't currently listed but are expected to be soon.

Homebase's final days in Scunthorpe in early January saw discounts of up to 90 per cent after the closure of 43 stores around the country was announced last year.

The Scunthorpe branch escaped an initial wave of closures in August, but fell victim to a second round in October.

The company blamed the closure on an extremely challenging environment reflecting weak consumer confidence and reduced consumer spending. It concluded that the rental costs of many locations were unsustainable and the stores were loss making.

The store on the Lakeside Retail Park next to the A18 has been empty for over a month, although building work has been carried out over the last few weeks.

The new business represents a positive step after an increasing amount of vacant properties in Scunthorpe's high street and retail parks.

Anybody interested in applying for a job at the new Home Bargains should keep an eye on their jobs website.
