Future of Hull's once popular Schooner pub has now been decided

The site of a once popular west Hull pub is set to be transformed into nine new homes.

The Schooner in Anlaby Park Road South, near Hessle Road, was once a thriving pub in the heart of the community.

But like so many working men-style boozers it struggled to make ends meet and closed in 2017.

That same year Hull City Council's planning committee agreed proposals for the boozer to be knocked down.

Piercy Design Ltd, which is based in Percy Street, near Hull city centre, is the firm responsible for the housing development and already has an impressive portfolio, including the flats in Freetown Way, Blaydes Dock and Waterloo Street.

The destruction of The Schooner, which was described on its Facebook page as a "traditional neighbourhood pub", took place last year.

Now a planning application has been submitted for the nine new homes on the site which will be mainly semi-detached three bedroom properties.

In the design and access statement, the applicant says: “We feel there are sufficient positives to justify an application of this nature on the site.

“The siting, scale, form and design of the proposed dwellings have been fully considered and it would ensure that those living closest to the dwellings would not be harmed by a loss to residential amenity and it is considered that the proposal is sympathetic and reflective to its surroundings.”

The applicant also believes the development will ensure any crime or disturbance will be reduced at the site.

The design and access statement says: “The redevelopment of this site with residential properties would remove issues such as noise, disturbance and potential for antisocial behaviour from the previous use and also associated with unauthorised access to the site due to the absence of occupation.”

The statement also talks about the quality of the housing which will meet a need in that area of west Hull.

It says: “In terms of its layout, scale, design and appearance, the development would have an acceptable impact on the character and appearance of this part of west Hull.

“The completed development will provide all the modern facilities of 21st century living and a positive place for its future occupants to live because of the spaciousness provided internally and the good level of outdoor amenity space.”

The application will be considered by Hull City Council’s planning committee next month.
