Hull business owner 'speechless' after her 'little salon' wins national Hair and Beauty Award

Tens of thousands of applicants wanted their hands on the trophy with only ten shortlisted for the final.

Salon owner, Dionne Laycock, 28, was so shocked her "little" salon was picked as the best in the country she froze and had to be lifted up onto the stage by her partner, Augustinas.

“It was crazy,” she said. “I couldn’t move I was in complete shock and was not expecting it at all.  My little salon is in Hessle Road and I was up against really big names, extremely posh, beautiful salons and we came first.

“I’m still in shock. I could not believe I won. I had to be lifted up to the stage and did not have a speech prepared because I didn’t think I was going to win.”

Dionne opened her salon seven years ago specialising in pure Russian hair sourced directly from Russia.

Since opening, it has become a huge success and has expanded working behind the scenes to offer a range of beauty treatments including the most popular new trend eyebrow, Microblading.

The salon is always fully booked and Dionne has gone from employing one member of staff to eleven "wonderful girls" in the seven years since the salon opened.

“Russian hair is the best. I wanted only the best so I went to Russia to source it myself,” Dionne added.

“We have gone from strength to strength and we never expected we were going to be as busy as we are now. There is eleven of us that work here and I started out with only one other girl when I first opened.

Dionne described the event as like being at the Oscars, with the red carpet rolled out and the champagne flowing.

She said: “It was unbelievable. There was a red carpet and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and we enjoyed a three-course meal with champagne. It was like the Oscars.

“The video of when I won is hilarious, I just couldn’t move. I’m still in a daze and speechless.”
