Cheers! Town brewery's first floor function facility gets the go-ahead

Docks Beers has been granted planning consent to transform the first floor of the brewery and taproom into a multi-use venue, providing a new location for the growing corporate market and live entertainment.

Having launched The Church last year, the owners have been delighted with the response, with the bar winning rave reviews and a first accolade as the drinks enjoyed up front are brewed in plain sight beyond.

Now town planners have backed the proposal for the King Edward Street venue’s upstairs, adding a third dimension to the investment.

“The continued expansion of Docks Beers is on track,” enthused director Will Douglas on getting the approval from North East Lincolnshire Council.

“Demand for our beers is increasing, we are making more and more beer, and now our thoughts are turning to upstairs.

“It is an amazing place with vaulted ceilings and arched windows. It is an equally inspiring setting as what we have created below and we have already hosted events for companies, be it meetings or team-building exercises involving a brewery tour.”

Funding streams are now being explored.

“It is going to be a flexible event space, with additional space for office staff, for our administration, sales and social media,” Mr Douglas said.

“We are keen to focus on corporate hosting and that requires a sales effort as well.

“There is lots going on, and it will really complement what we have created downstairs. So far we have only invested in the ground floor, which is what was affordable in 2018.

“Our extra staff and stock means we’re quickly running out of space. There is plenty of work still to do upstairs which is dilapidated and requires remedial work prior to conversion.

“We have delivered on what we said we would do when we were supported through the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, surpassing the number of jobs with three full-time and four nearly full-time employees now.

“We hope to get more funding support and aim to be open in good time for Christmas. It would be nice to have everything in place well before December 1.”

The weekend saw Docks Beers named Pub of the Season Winter 2018/19 by Grimsby & North East Lincolnshire Campaign for Real Ale.
