Final Preparations for North East Lincolnshire’s SEND EXPO
A Specialist Consultant with an OBE for her services to Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, is making the final preparations for an annual expo.
Karen Hoe, a freelance consultant supporting special needs families, carers, charities and organisations within the care sector, is preparing for the SEND EXPO, organised by the North East Lincolnshire Parent Participation Forum (NELPPF).
Karen, who is the Co-Coordinator of the Forum, will be welcoming parents, carers and young people with additional needs and disabilities to the event on Thursday 7th March at Grimsby Town Hall, which aims to showcase the support available from local service providers. In addition to workshops, Alexis Powell-Howard, Managing Director of Fortis Therapy and Training, will be delivering a talk, and there will be performances from community organisations.
NELPPF is just one of the many organisations and charities that Karen works with, providing support and guidance, delivering workshops, and advocating for young people and special educational needs families to members of Parliament and Government Ministers.
It is this extensive work that led Karen to receive an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2018. In October, HRH Duke of Cambridge presented Karen with her Order at Buckingham Palace.
Karen’s is already working on her next campaign: “My newest role is National Development Manager for Changing Places, helping develop a national campaign for better public-accessible toilets for the thousands of people who can’t access a toilet when they go out. This involves working alongside the Department of Housing, Transport and NHS, developing changes in the law to ensure all public building are accessible.
For five years, Karen has been a member of the Business Hive, E-Factor’s enterprise support hub, connecting with businesses and organisations from across the Northern Lincolnshire region. She added: “The support from the Business Hive has been exceptional and I could not have got where I am today if it hadn’t had been for this platform. I use the facilities and rooms for delivering workshops and Hot Desking at the Hive, networking has allowed me to build relationships and working partnerships with other members, and it’s fab to network over food and wine at First Tuesday events.”
Sam Burgess, Manager of the Business Hive, said: “I am totally thrilled to see Karen getting the recognition she deserves. Karen has worked so hard to get where she is today, juggling work and homelife. She is a force to be reckoned with and has helped so many families, while giving so much of her own time to do good. I hope she continues to provide this support as we are so lucky to have her”.
SEND Expo takes place event Thursday 7th March, 9.30am to 2.30pm at Grimsby Town Hall.
