Property: Champion of region in the world of business

Tuesday, January 20, 2009, 08:00

Economic development officer Lorna Brewerton-Reedman chairs the Commercial Property Liaison Group in North East Lincolnshire, bringing together agents and developers to enhance business opportunities. Dealing with investment enquiries on behalf of the local authority, she needs to know what offer there is in the area. Mrs Brewerton-Reedman also chairs the Europarc Forum, uniting users of the area's flagship business park. Here, she answers the questions for Business.

How did you come to work in the property sector, and what qualifications do you have?

I have worked in economic development for six years, recently completing a HNC in business at Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education. In future I'd like to gain a specific economic development qualification.

What was your first job in northern Lincolnshire?

Since leaving school in 1999 I have worked for NELC - initially as a Youth Trainee in the Housing Department.

What inward investment have you been most proud of?

Being a part of the significant bio-fuels interest has been fantastic. Handling national and international enquiries for the sector has been both interesting and challenging. Hopefully we'll see a big step forward in this current year with developments coming online. Our drive is to create jobs and improve economic wealth for all that are involved in North East Lincolnshire - and this is a great opportunity.

What is the best part of your job?

I would have to say making a difference - knowing that you have helped a business succeed, whether it be in choosing North East Lincolnshire as the right location or making life a little bit easier with the day-to-day running. I was once bought a bouquet of flowers from a business not just thanking me for my help but for always having a smile on my face - their words not mine! Some enquiries take years to come to fruition and others after the same period just don't happen - it's very rewarding when a company success is announced.

What, in your opinion, is the major issue for northern Lincolnshire?

The Humber Bridge is a huge barrier for us - making it difficult to make the most of the city region. There would be so many opportunities for staff, tourists and shoppers - but there's always the thought 'where else can we go that doesn't involve the charge?'

If you could add 300sq ft to your home, what would you do with it and why?

Hmm... seeing as though this answer is usually answered by the male species I hope to respond differently! I think extra space for shoes and handbags would be best idea, but could I spend the money on a permanent cleaner? Tidying is not my forte! If not I'd settle for an entrance hall as not to walk straight in to the living room and a conservatory on the back to make the most of the south facing view.

Biggest frustration in your sector, and biggest challenge?

Perception - both of the council and the area. Sometimes it is an uphill battle to convince people you're one of the good guys when you tell them you work for the council. Usually they want to complain about their bin collections or ask what their tax is being spent on. When we finally get to tell them, I think they're impressed by the lengths we go to in securing investment. This could be attending international exhibitions to meet them in the first place or spending weeks, months or years with the client to help demonstrate that it is the best place for them to do business. We always use our opportunities to shout about how fantastic Greater Grimsby is - to live, work and do business. When visitors make their first trip here, they are always pleasantly surprised.

If you hadn't taken this career path, what would you be?

A professional shopper - it's my weekend employment! Seriously, I would have probably have trained to be a teacher - just so that my bossiness gets put to a good use! I actually work with senior schools now, helping with business challenges and helping them see what can be achieved with hard work. I think teachers have an extremely difficult job that is very rewarding - not to mention the holidays!

When not working what do you most enjoy (other than shopping)?

Most of the Christmas holiday was spent watching darts, much to my husband's frustration - and in the new year most of my time will be spent enjoying watching sport and the occasional bike ride - there might even be time for a trip to the bingo. Don't knock it until you've tried it!
