Roll out the red carpet - it's time for a celebration

Tomorrow's the night when – at a prestigious gala presentation awards dinner held at Willerby Manor Hotel – they will finally find out who is and isn't about to become the winners among winners.

Following the screening of Oscar-style video profiles, sponsored by The Manufacturing Advisory Service – Yorkshire & Humber (MAS), the winners will be announced to an audience of leading media and business figures.

Finalists for the Ernst & Young-sponsored Business of the Year Award are De Smet Rosedowns Ltd, ESP Systex Ltd, and Hutton & Co (Ship Chandlers) Ltd.

De Smet specialise in pressing machinery for the vegetable oil and animal rendering industries, last year was one of its best ever and saw it exporting to more than 40 countries.

ESP Systex has been putting the smart in smartcards to boost sales by almost 300 per cent in three years.

Hutton & Co grew by 50 per cent last year.

The final frame for the Small Business of the Year Award, sponsored by The NatWest Bank, includes Cook Group Ltd, LeighTec Solutions Ltd, and SHE Knows Ltd.

Cook Group has boosted its turnover by more than 50 per cent during the past three years.

LeighTec has already made a name for itself at home, and now has its sites set firmly on Europe, the Middle East and beyond.

SHE Knows is unveiling a low cost e-learning package, has invested £500,000 in a state-of-the-art training centre and launched a staff agency.

The Gosschalks-backed Young Businessperson of the Year Award has Ian Bland the head of Paragon Data Services, Ricci Concept Motor Company founder Nick Sanderson, and Hutton & Co (Ship Chandlers) Ltd boss Alex Taylor as finalists.

Mr Bland bought Paragon three years ago and has since turned it into a vibrant, thriving and pioneering market-leader.

Mr Sanderson's company helps owners make their VAG and Porsche cars that bit more special.

Mr Taylor has made Hutton & Co has helped triple its turnover to more than £5m in four years.

Finalists for the Business Link Yorkshire-supported Start-up Business of the Year Award are Fishers Engineering Ltd, Lime Property, and Pioneer Door Systems (Hull) Ltd.

Fishers has adapted to survive and prosper during the recession evolving from steel fabricator to growing manufacturer of bespoke mobile game larders and meat processing units.

Lime targets the top-end of the lettings and sales market and, in a year, has earned a place among the city's leading relocation specialists.

Pioneer has been breaking its own targets with sales now 16 per cent ahead of schedule.

Finalists in the Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare-sponsored Contribution to the Community Award include BAE Systems, Hull FC Rugby League Club, and Kingstown Works Ltd.

BAE Systems Brough’s efforts range from helping veterans visit Normandy for the 65th D-Day anniversary to involvement with the Humberside Police Lifestyle project to benefit local youngsters.

Hull FC Rugby League Club is investing £2m in a brand new multi-purpose health training academy due to open next year, and in the past year more than 50,000 people have been involved in its community schemes.

Kingstown Works sponsors carnivals, buys youth teams kits and has organised lighting for the city’s Christmas tree, and provided 40 tonnes of sand for an inner-city beach day.

The final frame for the Sewell Group-supported Outstanding Young Achiever in Education and Business Award includes Matthew Bates, Joss O'Brien, and Glenn Paddision.

Matthew’s self-belief and determination have been key to his achievements with BP.

Joss, who works at BAE Systems Brough won awards never before gained by any other apprentice from the Brough site, he is now doing an HNC.

Glenn, a timber sales specialist with MKM Building Supplies, set out to work and to learn when he left school, recently won a national Apprentice of the Year title and also coaches an under 9s rugby team.

Finalists for the Kingston Communications-backed Communications Technology in Business Award Are IT@Spectrum Ltd, Kingstown Works Ltd, and Res-Q Contact Services Ltd.

IT@Spectrum Ltd is among only 10 Canon Advanced Solutions Partners in the country.

Kingstown Works used developed an automated system on which hours of clerical work can be done in a tiny fraction of that time.

Res-Q Contact Services Ltd provides specialist call centre services to client companies. Its business is under-pinned by heavy investment in leading-edge technology, the adoption of which has enabled it to win the new business fuelling its dramatic expansion.

The Hull University Business School-sponsored Training Excellence Award has Cranswick Pet Products, East Yorkshire Motor Services Ltd, and Jenkins Shipping Port Services Ltd as finalists.

Cranswick's staff play a version of Dragons Den to encourage employees to produce ideas beneficial to the business.

East Yorkshire Motor Services has so enhanced its in-house training that its team was among the first approved to deliver the latest courses.

Jenkins Shipping has made training a priority during the recession, rather than a budget to be slashed, it has invested heavily in its staff and is thriving.

The final frame for the Hull Forward-backed Design Excellence Award includes Ideal Boilers Ltd, Kitchen Guru, and SJS Games Ltd.

Ideal Boilers has a proud record of achieving new levels of home and water heating efficiency and its latest product sets yet another new benchmark for reliability.

Kitchen Guru supplies a wide variety of outlets – from Tesco to Harrods – with pre-packed exotic spices for home cooking.

SJS sets out to make learning Spanish fun with its Comprendo game. The founders worked with professional teachers to develop the product, which has been such a success that it is now selling strongly in Spain, typically to British ex-pats.
